News Bulletin: The "New" Sugar Cookie
The Sinclair Press
NY, Fri. Dec. 14, 2007
POTSDAM, New York - The local P&C has run out of rum flavoring and it is early in the season. One concerned citizen attributes the shortage to the unusually high number of rum logs now being produced. "Rum logs are sweeping the North Country!" says Darlene Sinclair of Madrid, NY. "Every family is making them. They are quick and easy - you can crank out dozens of delicious cookies in hardly no time at all. And kids of all ages can readily decorate them, making them the perfect family cookie! They are becoming a holiday staple."
If Sinclair's hunch is correct, the P&C will need to up the amount of rum flavoring procured in future holiday seasons. And since the month is not half over, they better get some more in - quick!
For those who don't yet have the recipe:
2 t. vanilla
2 t. rum flavoring
3/4 cup sugar
1 egg, unbeaten
3 cups sifted flour
1 t. nutmeg
Preheat oven to 350*.
Cream first three ingredients together in large bowl. Add sugar. Blend in egg. Gradually add flour and nutmeg.
Roll portions of dough into long ropes, approximately 1/2" thick. Cut off into 2" lengths, forming small "logs". Bake on ungreased cookie sheet 12-15 minutes or until barely tinged with golden brown. Remove and cool. Frost with Rum Frosting and decorate.
Rum Frosting
3 T. butter
1 t. rum flavoring
2 1/2 cups confectioner sugar
2-3 T. milk or cream
Blend together to spreading consistency.

10 Comments:
I can attest to the fabulous flavor of the delightful treats. The Sinclair's have a corner on this market and should have thought to buy up ALL the rum flavoring and then sell their precious treats for a profit!!
Miss you guys!
bulletin:
(The Hull Household Press)
Upon arriving home last evening after a four hour trip through the stormy mountains, Mrs. Nancy Hull discovered a tasteful birthday gift that will contribute to her Christmas decor. This said gift was accompanied by a thoughtful card from a dear friend.
It was received with joy and gratitude.
Film at eleven.
Too funny! Let us know if you need us to ship rum flavoring in from other parts of the country where the rum log phenomenon has not yet hit.
is the recipe copyrighted as well? cause, you know, we're already making them without your permission =)
LOL! Darlene, Paige and I were just telling our dad about these today. He loves to bake, and we thought we'd add a touch of "Sinclair Christmas" to ours :) Love, Q
We need a picture!
Yes, I meant of the cookies. I made them the other day and didn't know how to frost and decorate them "properly." I'll look for the picture now. Thanks!
I never had them til meeting you.
I look for them every CFA Christmas Program.
I can't get enough of them.
Darlene, Could you use "real" rum in place of the imitation flavoring at the grocery store? I never have used real rum in anything but was just wondering for these rum logs. Would it work or would it be too strong? Thanks for answering, if you can. A dedicated and blessed reader!
In answer to the question about using real rum - I don't honestly know. I don't know anyone who has tried that, although many have wondered. I doubt that it would be too strong - in fact I wonder if it would not be strong enough. If you have some, you could give it a try!
